BitCalc is an calculator aimed at programmers who have to work a lot with binary/decimal/hexadecimal values. It performs on-the-fly conversions between those number formats as well as basic logic operations and some simple math. Also supported are the most common integer data formats used for programming: Byte, Word and Double Word. Important to know is that floating point numbers (numbers with a decimal point) aren't supported, because they usually aren't interpreted as bit patterns. Although BitCalc can be a great help when programming with bit patterns, it isn't a good application to perform your normal math calculations. So please don't expect this software to be a replacement for your preferred calculator software, but rather as an extension to it.
Well, there isn't too much to say about how to use this software. Two accumulators are used to store values for all operations, the result is handled separate from the two accumulators. Numbers can be entered for each one of the two accumulators in binary, decimal or hexadecimal format. All entered values will automatically be reflected by the other input fields, e.g. if you enter a value in the hexadecimal input field for accumulator 1, the binary inputs as well as the decimal input field will automatically reflect that entered number. Besides that, everything else is literally self-explaining, since the status bar in the application window (the bottom line of BitCalc) is used to show a little description for the function if the mouse moves over an control element.
Free for commercial and non-commercial use.
The term 'BitCalc' is purely intended as an abbreviation for 'Bit Logic Calculator' to describe the functionality of the software and holds no connection with potential owners of registered trademarks or other rights.
BitCalc should work fine under Win95/98/ME/2K/XP. I was also able to successfully run it under Linux (Fedora Core 3) using Wine. Transparency is a feature that is only supported by Windows 2000 or higher, so the slider to modify the application transparency will only be available if an supported operating system is detected. Also, I noticed a problem with one of my computers at work with the transparency option, where the form completely disappeared (invisible). I tried to put in a fix and hope this will give a good solution. Should you encounter any problems when using transparency, then please close the program using the task manager and simply restart it. In that case you should not use the transparency option again.
BitCalc has been developed using Borland Delphi 5, the latest version is based on Delphi 7. UPX has been used to reduce the file of the compiled executable. If you are interested in more information about UPX as well as in a download of the latest version, please visit 'http://upx.sourceforge.net'.
